During the summer holidays from his last year at school, Oswaldtwistle student Zac is spending a week with us, working full time hours. He’s been thrown straight in at the deep end, working on a branding project for a Lancashire school. His tasks have involved researching the school’s history, positioning and current style; working out what is their brand saying, and what it should be saying.

Zac is experiencing design to see what it’s all about, and how it compares with his current focus; programming. During his time here, Zac has been able to see the surprisingly large crossover between computer coding and design. As most programming is essentially a problem solving exercise – how can I make something perform the task in the most efficient way possible – it can be approached in a similar way to design (albeit in a linear rather than lateral way). Zac already has experience in the design & building of an app, involving ‘front end’ design and working out how best to present the user with an attractive, easily understood interface. With his firm understanding of logic and problem solving, and armed with a better understanding of its relationship to design problems, Zac looks set to go far in programming.
